Our Role

The Saskatchewan Animal Enforcement Agency (SAEA) keeps owned animals safe across Saskatchewan!

Animal Protection Officers (APOs) are dedicated protectors for animals — like Child Protective Services, but for animals!

ANIMAL PROTECTION OFFICER (APO)

APOs protect ANIMALS from distress, abuse and neglect caused by humans.

Their work is provincial welfare enforcement under The Animal Protection Act.

APOs are appointed by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.

  • APOs work for an agency that reports to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.
  • Investigates animal neglect, abuse and distress.
  • Ensures animals have proper food, water, shelter and care.
  • Ensures animals receive necessary medical attention.
  • Can issue orders to protect animals.
  • Can remove animals from owners when they are in distress.
  • Enforces The Animal Protection Act.

EXAMPLES OF APO WORK

  • A dog has no food or water.
  • A horse has no shelter during bad weather.
  • An animal is injured and not getting care.
  • An owner is neglecting or abusing an animal.

APOs DO NOT:

  • Deal with stray animals.
  • Deal with wildlife (such as deer, coyotes, birds, moose, geese, etc.).
  • Respond to barking, licensing or other municipal bylaw complaints.
  • Impound animals running at large.
